Today we starte...

Today we started finalizing our research questions and honed in on our interviewing skills which will be very useful when we start going into the field for research. The topic for my research is how the methods police use to reduce the crime in the Inner Harbor affect the behavior of youth. For many youth in the harbor the treatment received from police is perceived to be hatful and discrimination merely based on the acts on a minority of teens. From the perspective of the police and state there have been too many violent acts from teens and if extreme measures aren’t taken the problem will only get worse. Are all teens being stereotyped because of one group of people? Do teens act violently to get back at police? Or because there is not much for them to at the Inner Harbor and the city as a whole? Can partnership between teens and the police reduce the violence rather than what is being done now?

 The Inner Har...

The Inner Harbor Project is going really well. We learned how to take field notes, how to observe things with great detail and how to approach people as well as the different types of interviews. We will use these skills as we start conducting interviews with people in order to help us gather research for our individual projects. My project is based on the specific attractions at the Inner Harbor and the different types of people they attract. I think that every place was built with a specific group of people in mind and it would be interesting to hear how these places at the Inner Harbor has changed and who are able to enjoy them.

      So fa...

So far the Inner Harbor Project is going well. This is all new to me, and I feel like a detective. Note taking, and observing ... hot afternoons at the harbor. It feels great. I’m just a regular teen that lives in the inner city of Baltimore near the harbor, I have the inside information everybody needs. I go out and party, I go to the gallery with friends, I see all the new stores being built and all the fights that go down, and twitter is my life. That’s where you see party promotions, twitter beef, break ups, make ups and friends making plans. I am wondering how social media affects teen actions down the harbor. I am anxious to investigate this over the rest of the summer. – Deja♥

Discovering a change

, discovering a new meaning of my own city. Realizing the inner core of my city falling apart piece by piece. Witnessing violence occurring in the little innocent place we call the inner harbor. With all the knowledge and experience that I have and didn’t put it in to help.  But then I started to make a change. This happened when I entered the inner harbor project. The most interesting challenging beneficial project I could ever participate in. A project for mature youths that want to make a change. That see that our precious little city known as Baltimore is falling apart & nobody seems to want to help it. But that has changed. We are a developed group that is determined to make a change to the inner harbor if it takes everything we got. We will show people that making a difference is important and I will continue to participate for I am Rickya’h Amariss Brooks , determined to make the inner harbor project a SUCCESS !

Just Getting Started

So I think the Inner Harbor Project is going well so far I think that my research is going to be fun ,  & a little challenging but I’m up for the challenge. My research topic is based upon MUSIC & how it affects the mood in the Inner Harbor. Music is my life & this is something I love so I’m gonna have fun doing it = ) I also think it would be interesting to hear what people have to say & if they ever notice the music.

Day 1 and 2

The Inner Harbor Project is off to a terrific start! On Monday, we talked about what we know and what we want to know. (One of the premises of the project is that the students are already insiders so we don’t need to spend precious time learning the culture of our target research space.) Turns out they know a lot. We talked a lot about the motivations behind youth on youth violence. The students said that the perpetrators of youth violence are what they call “clout chasers,” individuals who are trying to get attention any way they can. Everyone seemed to disagree with the characterization that the violence was caused by gangs. They referred to groups of youth as crews or developing gangs. They said they’re just groups of kids, mostly 14-16 year olds who get together to hang out. Although some crews have entrance requirements like physically challenging an existing member of the crew, they don’t come close to the harsh demands on recruits of more violent gangs.

Another thing students noted is that those who are fighting would find a time/place to fight, no matter what. However, the decision to meet in the Harbor is new. It used to be White Marsh Mall or other places in the county. Everyone seemed to have their own explanation for why the Harbor has become central but agreed this is one question we need to research.

Where most researchers start at point A and hope to get to C or D, we’re already starting at B. These students have so much knowledge about this highly discussed and polarized issue because they are living it. And it is this advantage, which I believe will lead to our success.
